Warriors win first 7-AAA game 63-59

T.J. Chesterfield shook off a thigh bruise to score 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as host Riverdale rallied to beat Oakland 63-59 in overtime to start the District 7-AAA schedule Friday night at Johnny Parsley Memorial Gymnasium.
The Warriors took the lead for good, 59-57, on Donya Burnett's layup with 1:55 left. Burnett also rebounded an Oakland miss on the other end off the floor, and D.J. Smith's free throw moments later gave the Warriors a three-point lead.
Oakland's Jahaad Lyons hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one before Smith hit one of two. Trailing 61-59, Oakland tried to work the ball inside before the Warriors stole the ball with 40 seconds left.
Smith, trapped in a double-team, called time out with 18.3 seconds to go. He hit two free throws later to ice the victory.
"It was a great comeback," Riverdale coach Kevin Woodson said. "We got a big turnover there that led to the free throws that tied it, and I thought that was the key play in the game. It's certainly a big win for us."
Chesterfield said he suffered the injury in practice a couple of days ago. But he helped Riverdale rally from a five-point deficit in the final minute of regulation.
Oakland's Kody Brown had a spinning eight-footer with 1:20 left that put Oakland ahead 51-47. With Riverdale down 53-48, Chesterfield hit a 3 with 31.8 seconds to go.
After Oakland's Jahaad Lyons hit a pair of free throws, Chesterfield had another layup with 12.2 seconds to go, making it 55-53.
Chesterfield then stole the ball on the inbounds pass and shot while being fouled. The shot rimmed out, but he hit both free throws with eight seconds left to tie the game.
Oakland got the ball to midcourt with 3.8 seconds left, but couldn't get a shot off. Christian Adams drove the baseline, but his pass went awry.
"Once we got into overtime," Chesterfield said, "we felt like the crowd gave us all the momentum."
Chesterfield had a team-high 15 points for Riverdale (12-4), while Smith had 14 points — all after halftime. Brown led Oakland with 15 points.
"We played our tails off," Oakland coach Mike Wright said, "and we had our chances in regulation. We're getting closer, but we've got to execute."
Despite coming in with a rough record, Oakland stood its ground early and held a 14-13 lead after one period. Brown pushed the lead to six with a jumper in the lane and a 3-pointer from the left wing, as the Patriots held Riverdale scoreless the first four minutes of the second quarter.
The Warriors finally scored, but a 3-pointer by Sean Carter and a falling-down shot in the lane by Rashod Carter gave Oakland some breathing room. Lyons' steal led to another basket, giving the Patriots a double-digit margin at 26-15.
Riverdale steadied itself, scoring the final six points of the half.
Points weren't much easier to come by in the third quarter. Riverdale cut its deficit to 31-28, but Oakland scored four straight — including an Adams layup and a Sean Carter hoop off a midcourt steal.
Smith closed the period with his second 3-pointer, making it 35-31 heading into the final eight minutes.
